Showcase a massive 324,000 square foot warehouse with a precision aerial flight...

Graybar came knocking on our door (not literally) seeking a partner who could plan, coordinate and execute a way to showcase their massive 324,000 square foot warehouse space in Brooklyn Park, MN. After acquiring new space within the building and taking over the entirety of the warehouse, Graybar Director of Operations Dion Bagaason wanted to be able to display to business partners the size and scale of their capabilities within the space. The idea was to get creative, so the video wasn’t just a boring cell phone video walking through the warehouse. What is more creative than flying a drone through the warehouse in one take, coordinating the movements of the 30+ employees involved for one perfect warehouse showcase.

We decided it was best to collaborate with an expert FPV pilot and we reached out to Air Jourdan Gomez. His work is incredible and that is showcased in this project.

From there, we scouted the facility several times with Jourdan and Graybar personnel to plan the flight path through the space to best showcase the entirety and scope of this massive building – and of course, we wanted to show this place off with plenty of life, energy, or warehouse action, i.e. moving fork lifts, massive shelves being stocked, trucks moving, boxes on the go and all the moving pieces required for a full-scale, top-performing warehouse space.

Unfortunately, the day of the shoot was incredibly windy – it was windy to the point that our final shot outside would have compromised quality because of these huge gusts of wind. One thing you learn as a seasoned production company is that you can plan and plan and plan, but with every project there will be unforeseen hurdles – the true test of professionals comes from being able to evaluate the situation, pivot if needed to and roll with a new plan. So instead of flying in the early afternoon and wrapping out before evening, we had to wait around for the wind to die down. This allowed us a few extra hours of coordination, ideating and planning.

In order to pull off all this movement, both drone and personnel, we carefully coordinated the drone’s movement through the facility and then timed all the personnel who were moving within the frame of the video. So our forklift operators, our package handlers, everyone single person involved we had on walkie to cue them as the drone made its way through the warehouse. I had a monitor to view the drone’s progress through the facility and called out to each person as we were ready for their specific movement. I called out “Action!” and “Cue the bicycle!” and “Cue forklifts!” on each flight – we had to execute our flight path several times before we finally got the perfect flight, on our last take just before we lost too much sunlight.

For post production, there were absolutely zero cuts, no edits to the video whatsoever. All the skilled flying you see on this crazy journey through the warehouse is expert planning, timed cues for all involved and skilled piloting. See for yourself in the final product shown above!

This “one-take” shot turned out better than we could have imagined. With the video set, the only editing we had to do was put all the sound effects into the mix. As you can imagine, as the drone flies through the warehouse, the only noise the camera can hear is the high-pitched drone propellors. Our team inserted all the audio you hear in the video by recording those sounds on site at the warehouse with a top tier boom microphone and audio recorder and then timing and inserting those sound effects into the video as the drone passes each noisy thing within the warehouse. The sound design on this video is really what makes these FPV fly throughs come to life.

Dion and the Graybar team were thrilled with the final video and we could not agree more.
